Sole prop., bought merch. to sell, but sold none this year. Where exactly is this loss reflected in Sch. C?

This is a new business. I can't figure out how to make Schedule C reflect my loss. Part III (Cost of Goods Sold) always ends up being zero the way I do it. Where do I deduct the amount I spent purchasing merchandise (none of which I've sold yet)?
