Do you wonder sometimes how being a Christian can lead some people to being so incredibly hateful?

I was raised Catholic and was taught "they will know we are Christians by our love," as the hymn goes. I don't trash other faiths. But I'm always so amazed to see my fellow Christians trash me for mine. Who teaches this, and why?
